A Handy Fall Heat Pump FAQ

customer-1-tech-with-customer-at-table-3

You’ve got questions and you can bet that we have answers! Heat pumps are becoming more common in our area for a variety of different reasons, so we think it only makes sense that we provide people with a handy FAQ to help answer questions and make these systems feel more familiar. Heat pumps aren’t some kind of “trend” that’s going to be replaced by another cool new heating or cooling system in the future. These systems are here to stay because they do an exceptionally good job at heating and cooling space without using too much energy.

Also, the times are changing, and it’s becoming clear that SEER2 requirements are going to mean that everyone starts investing in new, more efficient heat pump systems for their homes. So, whether you’re just getting started with heat pump technology, or you’re trying to discern what’s wrong with your existing system, this is the blog post for you.

How Do Heat Pumps Work?

Heat pumps work similarly to central air conditioners in that they cool or heat air through evaporation and condensation of refrigerant. The refrigerant evaporates and draws in heat from one area, and then condenses and disperses the heat to another. In the case of air conditioning, this happens in a loop that cools the space inside while releasing the heat outdoors.

During the wintertime, a heat pump will work in reverse and heat the inside of a home instead.

Do Heat Pumps Break Less Often Than Other HVAC Systems?

No, unfortunately, every heating or cooling system has the capability of running into problems. Systems are manufactured according to rigorous standards, so they’re all designed to last as long and with as few repair needs as possible. But the good news is that more and more HVAC technicians are becoming acquainted with heat pump technology, so it’s easier to schedule repairs than it used to be.

How Does a Heat Pump Switch From Heating to Cooling Mode?

There’s a component in a heat pump called a “reversing valve,” which is responsible for reversing the flow of refrigerant so the system can heat a space instead of cool it, and vice versa. This component requires its own maintenance, and if you’re noticing a problem with switching from heating to cooling mode, then this might be the culprit!

Do Heat Pumps Still Require Regular Air Filter Changes?

Absolutely! Heat pumps are forced-air heating and cooling systems, which means that they cycle through the air of your home, kicking up dirt, dust, debris, and other contaminants as they work. Changing out your air filter is an important part of being an owner of a heat pump, so make sure you do it at least once every 1–3 months.

Are Heat Pumps Worth the Investment?

This question is obviously subjective, depending on who reads it. For someone on a tight budget to invest in a new heating or cooling system, a simple and affordable electric furnace will do the trick, or a standard central air conditioner. But for those with a little more money to spend initially, heat pumps are great investments that pay off in both efficiency and convenience throughout their lifespans.
